Album DescriptionThe event was simply billed as “Willie Nelson Sings the Blues,” but thehistoric two-night stand on January 12 and 13, 2007 at Jazz at LincolnCenter was far more than that. Call it a summit meeting between twoAmerican icons, Willie Nelson & Wynton Marsalis, two of the mostsignificant figures in modern-day country and jazz, who discoveredcommon ground in their love for jazz standards and the blues. Theirperformance stirred the sounds of New Orleans, Nashville, Austin andNew York City into a brilliantly programmed mix that was equal partsdown-home and cosmopolitan, with plenty of swing and just a touch ofmelancholy. To say that these shows were a hot ticket would be anunderstatement. Luckily, the tapes were rolling and the results of thisunique collaboration now constitute the Blue Note album Two Men WithThe Blues for everyone who couldn’t cram into The Allen Room. Featuringgreat playing from one of the hottest bands around these classic tracksare given new life by the extraordinary dual talents of Willie Nelsonand Wynton Marsalis. At a time when most people are thinking ofretirement, Willie has never been busier. His profile has been high inrecent weeks with his various career retrospective releases and soldout tour and this album can rightly stake it’s place alongside anythingelse he has done. Wynton rarely sounds so relaxed and both of thesemusical giants are clearly having the time of their lives together onthese new interpretations of some of the greatest songs of the 20thcentury.Amazon.comTwo Men with the Blues is no more a jazz album than a bluesalbum. It’s neither jazz returning home, nor blues wandering out. WhatWillie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis have created is a compilation ofjump-blues standards with arrangements that compliment both genres. While most of the album is careful not to take itself too seriously, there are a few tracks that seem to plod on for ages. The live setkicks off with the upbeat “Bright Lights, Big City,” on which Marsalis’horn is crisp and full. “Ain’t Nobody’s Business” and “Basin StreetBlues” are arranged slower than better known versions but still fit thealbum’s context. Nelson and Marsalis’s take on “Stardust” comes off asa bit too “Sinatra” for Nelson’s thin vocal, while “Georgia on My Mind”just doesn’t work at all. Still, the things that work, work well.”Night Life” and “Rainy Day Blues” are particular stand-outs, and”Caldonia” is a faithful homage to the Louis Jordan original (minusJordan’s screaming punch line, of course). The album ends riding highon closer “That’s All,” with itsstraight-out-of-a-New-Orleans-Baptist-church feel. Both Nelson andMarsalis are notorious for collaborating with other artists. Therefore,it seems only natural that they’ve found themselves on a projecttogether. Overall, this set is well worth the wait. –Eric C.P. Martin

Customer Reviews

It’s all fun ! A mandatory “buy”.5In early 2007 two of contemporary American music’s greatest icons, jazz trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis and country music legendWillie Nelson, teamed up for a couple of unforgettable nights at NewYork’s Lincoln Center. Both love the blues, and love to play it over-easy, Nelson’s vocal staying light and playful. This album is the souvenir from those evenings. What you don’t getis the sight of two aging legends twinkling convivially at each againstthe night lights of Manhattan, without which the flowering of audienceapplause around each solo is a little frustrating… The pair are backed by a crack five-piece band firing on allcylinders – saxophonist Walter Blanding, pianist Dan Nimmer, bass manCarlos Henriquez, harmonica player Mickey Raphael and Ali Jackson ondrums. There are all kinds of blues – downhearted, rude, even goodtimeblues. The sort on this recording could be called country blues, because of the presence of Willie Nelson. There are also several partyblues, and quite a few pieces, such as “Stardus”t and “Georgia on MyMind”, that aren’t blues at all.But the main point is that it’s all fun. Nelson, from Texas, andMarsalis, from Louisiana, have no trouble finding common ground. Thelatter contributes some majestic playing, in the manner of LouisArmstrong. Altogether, as with some of the best blues, this doesn’tmake you sad, it makes you feel better.Nelson has always been ready to take on challenges. Here, he turnson the downhome charm, as he joins Marsalis’s compact group for a setthat has the unpretentious aura of a jam session.Nelson’s vocals on “Stardust” are a touch brighter than HoagyCarmichael may have intended but the effect is leavened by a smokey, gently twisting trumpet line full of yearning beauty courtesy ofMarsalis. Another Nelson standard, “Georgia On My Mind”, has a sweet, subdued but compelling intimacy and could legitimately lay claim to thetitle of ultimate standout track on an album of standout tracks.Peak of the album: the heady, hard-core blues-ballad rendition of”Night Life”, “Caldonia”, which swings amiably and “Bright Lights, BigCity”, which exudes the requisite swagger.A mandatory buy.Moment Of ForeverFrom The Plantation To The PenitentiaryHistoric: American Masters at Play5Everyone knew that this summit of master musicians would bespecial. The session was recently broadcast on National Public Radio’sJazz at Lincoln Center, and as we already have an Amazon video excerptof the event, we can expect to see the entire meeting on PBS, with DVDas pledge gift. The CD, however, has had the opportunity for furtherelectronic mixing and improvements by Delfeayo Marsalis and Jeff Jones. So what can we say about the quality of the music and thepersonalities? How many superlatives are there? But you first must be aWillie Nelson fan and you must be a jazz enthusiast who honors WyntonMarsalis and the Lincoln Jazz folk for their precision and urbansophisticated development of New Orleans roots. Thus if you are amongthat very large number of music lovers, you must own this recording.Even the insert notes and photos are nicely done. As for theselections, we have Nelson’s own oft recorded theme song, Georgia on MyMind, and we also have Stardust, which was included in the album of thesame title that demonstrated that Nelson was more than a countrysinger; indeed that album is his all-time best seller. I, however, enjoyed Rainy Day Blues and the other tunes that follow, which are whatthe album is supposed to be about: the blues. This album is simply fun.You will love it.not the “historic … summit” the product description would lead you to believe3You can probably figure out what this album might sound like. It’ssensible and relatively enjoyable at times, but hardly earthshattering. If you’re looking for dinner jazz that might make yourguests ask, “Is that Willie Nelson?” This is it.

Customer Reviews

Amazing camera for the price!5If money is no object and optical image stabilization is yourprimary concern, then I recommend you buy the Canon HFS10 or HFS100.Now, with that out of the way, you have to temper your expectationswith what you paid for. This camera is at least $600 less than theHFS100 for basically the same image quality minus image stabilization. You will see that I compare this with the Canon a lot because Canon hasbeen king of the camcorder scene for a few years now.Pros:The image quality is almost as good and even better than the Canonin some aspects (based on online reviews as I don’t own the Canon). Thelow light sensitivity is excellent (there is an option to turn up thesensitivity level). The thing we need to keep in mind is this:camcorders are best when used in areas with plenty of light. There isreally no reason to film at night unless you absolutely need to. Forthe times when you want to film the night light or night scenery, thiscamcorder does its job very well. When hooked up to my 1080ptelevision, the video was spectacular. I can’t imagine how much betterthe Canon would be but I’m very satisfied with this. I know that it’simpossible for the Canon to be twice as good as this camcorder fortwice the price, at least for me.It is small! I can definitely take this with me on vacation everywhere I go and not tire out my arms. It’s much smaller than I expected, almost like a toy. Having used 5-pound camcorders in the past, this isdefinitely a good thing.I can now leave my point and shoot camera at home as thissubstitutes as a regular still camera, hence the dual camera moniker. It takes 8 meg stills (don’t use the 12 meg option as that’sinterpolated) which is impressive for a camcorder this size/price.There are ISO adjustments which I believe is lacking in the Canon.Cons:Image stabilization. If you like to film videos without tripods, monopods then I suggest you stay away from this. However, for under$500, I was able to buy this camcorder and a tripod, 16GB SDHC, and acamcorder bag. No optical stabilization can match a tripod/monopod. Ifyou’re serious about creating timeless videos that you can view 20years from now, you need a tripod. Period. Yes, it would be nice if the image stabilizer was better for thetimes when I don’t have a tripod with me. However, it’s serviceable ifI hold the camera very steady so it’s not as bad as some people wouldlead you to believe. I don’t plan on filming while walking very oftenso it’s perfectly fine. If you have a shaky hand problem and hatetripods/monopods then stay clear. You can mitigate shaking with (1) a tripod, (2) steady hands, or(3) deshaker software (free online). You cannot mitigate $600 or lowlight sensitivity. No matter what camcorder you buy, you will need atripod eventually if you’re serious about taking good videos. So budgetthat into your purchase plan.Normally, I would deduct one star for the bad image stabilization, but for a camcorder with superb image quality, low light sensitivity, and the fact that I can throw in a 16GB SDHC, tripod, and camera bag(all bought separately of course) for around $550, it’s absurd to docka star for it. This is the best camcorder for the money. A Solid 4-star camera. Excellent video quality. Would definitely recommend!4Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R13KU6HS2MB3A9The test footage (starts around 2:07 in the video – it was shot handheld) has been HEAVILY compressed and resized from 1920×1080! Buthopefully, you can still get a general idea, especially the zoomcapability. (the open boxing is obviously from a different camera) This camera is really easy to use. I did not have to read themanual, it’s really user-friendly, but it’s nice that they include anactual manual book for you! (Funny how when I wish I could use amanual, some manufacturers only include it on a CD!) However I didlater read it to understand more about a certain feature; the manual isjust as easy to follow. What I love most about this camera is the ability to set customshortcuts to the 4 directional buttons on the camera. I love havinggreater control of the camera, so I set the shortcuts to quickly setmanual focus (you can toggle between focuses), focus lock, exposurelock, and exposure compensation. This way, you can really have morequick controls of the camera than using the auto focus. It’s simple enough, but if you want it more basic/restricted, youcan set it to simple mode (not something I would use or care). All youget then is:video: select between HD and web qualityfocus: automatic and macroflash mode: auto, forced, offFor video options, you can choose from:* Full-HR 1920×1080 (60 FPS HR) – you better have one powerfulcomputer if you want to edit these files. But for simple cut/joinedits, you can do that through the camera of course. * Full-HD 1920×1080 (60 field/s) – same reasons with above* Full-SHQ 1920×1080 (30 FPS SHQ) – recommended* HD-SHQ 1280×720 (30 FPS SHQ)* TV-SHQ 640×480 (30 FPS SHQ)* Web-SHR 448×336 (240 FPS SHR) – limited to 10 second-recordings* Web-UHR 192×108 (600 FPS UHR) – limited to 10 second-recordings* Voice MemoFor Photos:* 12m 4000×3000* 8m-H 3264×2448* 8m-S 3264×2448* 6m 3264×1840 (16:9)* 2m 1920×1080 (16:9)* 2m 1600×1200* 0.9m 1280×720 (16:9)* 0.3m 640×480* 8m 3264×2448* 4m 2288×1712Focal = 5.95-59.5mm 1:2.0-2.8 Filter size: 37mm (this is the size that you need if you want to attach a wider lens)Some pet peeve:- In the menu, it shows at the bottom in this order:(MENU) EXIT (SET) OKbut on the actual buttons, the Set button is on the left and themenu button is on the right, so I think that’s how they should displayit on the menu as well. – I wish the SD card door would just be a slide open mechanisminstead or just not have it at all for quick removable. Somewhatannoying to have to open the LCD, which also happens to turn on thecamera, just to remove the memory card.- Even though Sanyo is a Japanese company, ironically, there’s no Japanese in the Language Option. I also have the TH-1 (720p) model, which is QUITE disappointingcompared to this camera, but this one is definitely worth shooting withbesides the obvious higher resolution; it performs much better in lowlighting (quality is no comparison). On the TH-1, it’s REALLY horriblewhen you shoot in low lighting. Low lighting is where most HD camerashurt in quality; it’s definitely not the best, but it’s not the worsteither when it comes to shooting in low light with this camera. The TH-1 model does not warn about not having an SD card inserted(because it has 43MB internal memory so it will show an internal memoryicon), but this camera (FH-1) will constantly nag you about it becauseit has no internal memory. I noticed there are two extra options withthis camera versus the TH-1: Photo Wide-D (compromises both dark andbright areas) and Photo StabilizerI don’t know if I received a broken remote, but the ON/OFF buttondid absolutely NOTHING. And yes, I’ve tried holding it for severalseconds and from different directions. However, every other buttonseemed to work.Unless you hit record, the actual image on the screen is actuallynot the full sharpness quality; I believe they do this to prolongbattery life when you’re still setting up your shot. So it’s better ifyou don’t always rely on what you’re looking at until you hit record. If you hold the MENU button while in playback mode, it will get ridof the display text on the screen and just show a seekbar of the video. If you press the SET button while you’re setting up your shot, itwill get rid of all the display text info on the viewing screen;however, there isn’t seem to be a way to get rid of all the info textdisplay once you hit record. Pros:- 1080p – excellent video quality. It’s HD!- I love the 4 button custom shortcuts!- Compact! (smaller than a soda can) yet has a large 3″ LCD screen and amazing what it can produce despite its size- Impressive 16x zoom! – Image stabilizer (not bad… I can see it functioning, although it’s not optical for greater stability) – Excellent battery life (it’s also nice that it displays theactual approx battery life time left instead of just a generic bar)- Comes with standard composite(yellow; red/white)+S-video AND component (RGB – HD)- Comes with a small remote- It takes photos (definitely usable unlike the photo feature with the TH-1, which was horrible) – Files play smoothly on PS3! (take SD card out of the camera and use a card reader to it) – Cut/Join videos within the camera- Transfer directly to hard drive without a computer with the camera. – You can create new folders within the camera and set where you want the recording to go to.- Can fast forward up to 15x and can display 21 video thumbnails(by pressing the zoom out button; default shows 8 thumbnails) that yourecorded on the screen- Can take snapshots frame by frame of recorded videoCons:- Not Touch Screen (then again, the 4-direction button control makes it very quick to do everything)- No automatic lens cover- No built-in memory- No external mic- I wish it would have an option to keep recording even if youclose the LCD (it ends up stopping the recording because itautomatically goes to standby mode)- Preset manual focus distances (but at least they have auto focus lock)- Can’t manual focus once you hit record. (however, you can still focus lock/unlock)- Tripod stand hole is not centered! (Why do they have to do this?!) – The set button has somewhat of a cheap feel Overall, I give this camera a SOLID 4 star rating. (And I am apretty harsh rater and rarely give 5 stars) I am happy with the qualityand the quick access to the manual controls. The price is just righttoo. I hope they will make a waterproof version of this (I know theyhave it for 720p). Definitely would recommend. Avoid the TH-1 model(even if you’re on a budget). Great video and pictures in a compact size.5I was lucky enough to receive this on Thursday and able to use itover the Easter holiday. I made several test videos and pictures tocheck out all the features before using it on Easter get-togethers. Istrongly recommend buying this a couple weeks before using it on bigevents so you can test out features and set it up to get expectedresults. It’s a great point and shoot camera/camcorder as long as youknow what you’re doing. It’s not much bigger than a computer mouse andfits easily in a clip case. It came with a component video, S. video, mini USB and mini USB adapter (for the hard drive). It did not includea mini HDMI cable. For the Easter recordings, I used it in the full HD mode 60fps withnoise reduction on because it produced the best video on a true HDtelevision when checking out the test files. The quality is extremelygood. as good as and in many cases better than actual HD TV programs. Anice feature is being able to take still pictures from video by playingit back and pausing on the frame you want. The still pictures from thevideo files were very clear and plenty good for printing. The stillphotos were all done in the eight megapixel mode with excellentresults. It was easy to switch between recording video and takingsnapshots. I took a few snapshots while recording video and everythingworked OK but the picture quality of the snapshot wasn’t that muchbetter than taking a frame snapshot from the video during playback.I tried a few of the features but haven’t had a chance to reallyanalyze them in detail. The image stabilization feature has its limitsshooting video. It does a good job when zoomed out, but you’ll need atripod when zooming in halfway or more. When zoomed in, it’s hard tohold the camera steady enough for the stabilization feature to work. Itis very important to hold the camera steady except if purposelypanning. When the camera jerks, it causes the entire image to movewhich causes the MPEG-4 compression algorithm to create a whole newpicture instead of just the small portion of actual action. This comesacross as sort of a strobe effect on a large high definition TV.The standby mode works great. When you’re finished shooting, justclose the display. When you’re ready to record again, just open thedisplay and it will be ready before you can remove the dust cover. Theface chaser had a hard time locking in on more than two or three faces. This might be because nobody was standing still for a very long periodof time. When it did lock in it seemed to be good at correcting. Thiswill need more experimenting. The display brightness was good and adjusts well between direct sunlight and indoors.A useful feature is the ability to edit and merge video files righton the camera without the use of a computer. You can also connect thecamera to a hard drive without a computer. The downside is that thedrive has to be formatted to fat 32 and can’t be over 1 TB. Filetransfer is very easy on any computer with a USB 2 connection.

Customer Reviews

~yet another amazing album — with the added touch of songwriting~5George Strait has routinely been releasing amazing music for thepast 3 decades, so it comes as no big surprise that this album is againloaded with pure country gems. So what more could he possibly add afterall these years, and his slew of #1 hits? Well, for the first timesince the debut of his long career, George co-wrote 3 songs on the CD– and his son, Bubba Strait, also had a hand in writing 4 songs on thealbum. Both of them teamed up to help pen the first single, “Living ForThe Night”, which is an amazing ballad. It’s one of the strongestsingles of 2009, and is quickly becoming yet another huge hit for hiscollection. The whole album was recorded in Key West, Florida — and itseems to have a nice overall laid back feel to it. The title track, “Twang”, is an upbeat and catchy single, and isbound to be his next sure-fire #1 hit. It’s a pure classic country songwith lots of twang, done in unique George Strait style. The secondtrack on the CD, “Where Have I Been All My Life”, slows things down abit — and it features a great tune with strong lyrics. It wasco-written by Sherrie Austin, who a few years ago had a couple top 30singles of her own (“Never Been Kissed” and “Streets Of Heaven”).”Where Have I Been All My Life” is a great ballad which reflects backon all the things that we may have missed out on earlier in our life, and is definitely one of the highlights on the album. “Easy As You Go”is a nice laid back song, and “Arkansas Dave” is another interestingtune — which was written solely by Bubba Strait. It’s a very simpletraditional storytelling song, which has the feel of classic musicreleased a few decades ago…Johnny Cash would be proud! The last songon the album, “El Rey”, will be quite a surprise to many who aren’texpecting it. It’s entirely sung in Spanish — similar to Mexicanmariachi style of music. It has to be one of the most unusual songsthat George has ever recorded, and it’s most likely a love or hate typeof tune. One thing is for sure, it’s definitely an unexpected end tothe album! To me, “The Breath You Take” is by far the stand out track on thealbum. It’s a simple song, not overproduced, and it’s just so strongand powerful. It’s one of the best songs I’ve heard in a long time, andI’m sure this will be a blockbuster hit single. It is such aninspirational ballad, and I think it seems to have a “Song Of The Year”nomination written all over it. You really have to take a listen tothis song — even if it’s the only tune that you hear. Overall, Georgesounds just as strong as he’s ever been, and I would definitelyrecommend this album!Strait’s Loyal to the “Twang”4Prime Cuts: The Breath You Take, Where Have I Been All My Life, Beautiful Day for GoodbyeLoyalty is the secret to Strait’s success. Despite amassing astaggering 57 number 1 hits, Strait rarely disappoints: in fact, everyCD is loaded with sing-a-long barn burners, pit and sawdust honkytonkers and his signature heart tugging ballads. Adopting such awinsome template “Twang,” Strait’s 26th studio album, is again bound tobe voraciously devoured by his legion of fans. Strait’s not onlyconsistent in his audio output, but he is loyal to a small handful ofsongwriters who have first brought him to the dance. Faithfully hereturns for the cream of their crop each year and here their names areagain engraved in the song’s credits. They include Jim Lauderdale, DeanDillon, Steve Bogard and Rick Giles. However, lest naysayers yawn, thinking that all is predictable Strait does throw in a few curve ballsthis time: this CD finds Strait’s adult son Bubba Strait coaxed his dadfor his own three contributions. Further, Strait himself picks up hispen in co-writing three songs himself, something he has not done sincethe early 80s. Another surprise comes towards the end of the CD whenStrait recorded an entirely Spanish song “El Rey.”As with most Strait albums the ballads are the highlights: DeanDillon again tops the list of Strait writers with the best entrieshere. A gorgeous ballad in the tradition of “I Cross My Heart” and”True,”"The Breath You Take” chronicles the highlights of theprotagonist’s life such as the time he met his wife, the birth of theirchild and so forth. While lead single “Living for the Night,” anotherDillon co-write with Strait and son Bubba, is a string-laden torturedbarroom lament about a man so trapped in his pain that he only livesfor the night drowning in booze. Wisdom comes with age and experienceis the theme of the steel-drenched “Where Have I Been All My Life,”which is surprisingly co-written by former Arista artist SherrieAustin. After hearing the way Strait slowly nuances and caresses eachword of the heartbreaking “Beautiful Day for Goodbye,” one is temptedto place Strait on the same pedestal as some of country music mostvenerated crooners such as Vern Gosdin and George Jones. When the tempo picks up, Jim Lauderdale’s co-write “I Gotta Get toYou,” despite its cheesy lyrics, spells a future number one hit forStrait. A few plays of “I Gotta Get to You” will certainly get onehooked to its infectiously melodic line. “Arkansas Dave,” atwist-ending tale involving an old gunslinger, is the panacea to thecurrent epidemic of songs dearth of depth and imagination. Thoughwritten by young Bubba Strait, “Arkansas Dave” has a fermented age toit harkening back to the story songs of Kenny Rogers and Johnny Cash inthe 70s. Further, Strait indulges in some swampy blues with a cover ofDelbert McClinton’s “Same Kind of Crazy.” Though Strait offers hispledge of allegiance to country music, the title cut “Twang” could havebeen more anthemic if it weren’t for its average melody. The big buzz here is “El Rey,” a song recorded entirely in Spanish.Though this is the first time Strait has crossed the linguisticboundary, “El Rey” (which means “The King”) a tune that exaltsmasculinity, sounds like any upbeat mandolin-led Spanish tune outthere. And despite Strait sounding very much like a native Spanishspeaker, the song just doesn’t live up to its hype. However such cavilsin no way tarnishes “Twang” as a consistent good album from Strait.Anyone who has had loved Strait’s vast catalog will find much todelight in here–the ballads in particular are tantalizingly great. The King Still Reigns5After nearly three decades of recording, more number-one singlesthan any other artist in history, a Country Music Hall of Fameinduction, and creating the template for the perfect country musiccareer, one could almost expect George Strait to phone in his albumsand take it easy. After all, he probably could record a list of Texascattle futures and earn another Album Of The Year nomination; he’s justthat good. However, Strait’s 41st album, Twang, finds the most recentArtist of The Decade venturing into new territory. He takes risks, andhe clearly has no intention of taking his last curtain call anytimesoon. For starters, Strait takes on the role of songwriter – somethingthat hasn’t happened since his second album, Strait From The Heart, in1982 (the song was “I Can’t See Texas From Here”). He collaborates withson Bubba and longtime Strait tunesmith Dean Dillon (“The Chair,” and”Marina Del Rey,” among dozens more). The result? Strait contributes tothree songs that stand shoulder to shoulder with anything he’s recordedbefore – most notably, the smooth and heartbreaking “Living For TheNight,” the album’s first single. “He’s Got That Something Special” isa country toe-tapper, defying the listener not to sing along. Fatherand son craft a classic barroom tearjerker, “Out Of Sight Out Of Mind,”which is pure Strait, through and through. Bubba Strait also adds”Arkansas Dave,” a murderous story song, reminiscent of material MartyRobbins and Johnny Cash would have recorded in the `70’s.Elsewhere, Dean Dillon, Jessie Jo Dillon and Casey Beathard’s “TheBreath You Take” provides the album’s emotional cornerstone. Straitworks his magic, taking a clichéd line like ” Life’s not the breath youtake/But the moments that take your breath away” and skillfully makesit resonate. The song is one of the most beautiful to ever appear on aGeorge Strait album, and it deserves to be a future single. Thesure-fire second single is the roof-raising title track. Other funmoments include “Some Kind of Crazy” and “Hot Grease and Zydeco,” whichis sure to become a staple in Strait’s live shows. The album’s biggest surprise is saved for last: “El Rey” is aMexican folk song that he sings – quite convincingly – completely inSpanish. If the country music thing doesn’t work out for him, Straitcould easily have a career on the Tejano circuit. The title translatesto “The King,” and the last lines read: “A cowboy told me/You don’thave to arrive first/but just know how to arrive.” Appropriately, thissums up Strait’s career thus far. His has been a journey of class, consistency and influence, with great humility. The King, indeed.

RicksPicks5First, I have to confess I am a BIG Delbert fan. But, this Cd showswhy. Delbert performs with humor, experience, sadness in that seasonedvoice. These songs are well written; and well presented by DICK50(Delbert’s road band). Listen to “Wouldn’t You Think…” and you willSEE a stood-up guy in an empty bar. “Starting a Rumor” will make youwonder if this relationship is for real. “Never Saw in Coming” revealsthe simple side of most guys. “When She cries at Night” feels like aconfused older guy about to lose his younger girlfriend. Delbert willmake you laugh, cry and wonder why. There is only one thing better than listening to Delbert on this CD… seeing him and the band live!! RICKThe first time is the best…5I’ve heard the odd song from Delbert McClinton, but this is thefirst time I’ve ever felt inclined to pick up one of his records. Ifthis is par for the course, then I’ve been missing out. Delbert slides as easily into country, blues, jazz, gospel, andfolk styles as anyone I’ve ever heard. He does this so naturally, thatyou could easily miss it if you weren’t paying attention. This recordrewards close listening, but can also be enjoyed at a party. It willget the attention of anyone with a taste for any of the above mentionedstyles, but has an appeal far beyond the average purist. Each song hasits own identity, but not so much that you find yourself saying “Oh,here’s the country tune.” The stew has such a fine mix of ingredientsthat you’re apt to hear a blues vocal turn within the context of acountry tune or jazz piano on a blues tune. Or a little bit of all ofthe above. This is done rather seamlessly; it is never distracting orjarring for the listener. All is in service to the song, and hisremarkable voice, which other reviewers here have described perfectlyas weathered. I liken it to a perfect cup of coffee – bold and smooth, with a bit of a kick. You won’t have any problem hearing orunderstanding the words, that’s for sure.Try it. My bet is that you’ll take to it like your favorite shirt or pair of shoes.Actual Music Startled Everyone5Thought I had just gotten too old to appreciate anything new. Butit turns out that if somebody writes actual songs and performs themwith people playing actual instruments then something new and great canstill be produced. The title must be irony, because if the samples heredon’t motivate you to immediately click Buy It Now then you probablyneed to run out and acquire some taste, stat. I did make sure to listento the actual album before coming back to try and give this 5 stars -now I wanna give it 10. If it was 1.99 for physical copies I’d buy asmany as I could afford and hand them out randomly, just to spread thegospel. As it is, this is the best 2 bucks you will ever ship over theInterslice, because in return you will get renewed faith in the powerof music.
